Turning Everyday Spending into an Investment
Turning Everyday Spending into an Investment
Problem: Many young Indians find it difficult to save and invest regularly due to impulsive spending and lack of easy, automated investment options.
Solution: Jupiter’s “Magic Spends” automatically invests a small amount in mutual funds or digital gold every time users make a purchase via UPI or debit card, making investing effortless, routine, and accessible with minimal effort and control.

Users Spent Easily. Investing Was the Hard Part.
India’s digital consumers—especially 20–35-year-olds—spend confidently but hesitate when it comes to investing. They’re not lacking awareness. They’re lacking a frictionless, emotional bridge between spending and investing. Every investment tool in the market starts with “How much do you want to invest?”
We asked a different question: What if investing didn’t feel like a decision?
India’s digital consumers—especially 20–35-year-olds—spend confidently but hesitate when it comes to investing. They’re not lacking awareness. They’re lacking a frictionless, emotional bridge between spending and investing. Every investment tool in the market starts with “How much do you want to invest?” We asked a different question: What if investing didn’t feel like a decision?
As a Senior Product Designer
I Led design for Magic Spends—from research to launch. The idea sparked while shadowing support calls, where users said investing felt hard, expensive (₹1,000+), and effort-heavy. I turned that into a low-friction, habit-forming micro-investment experience tied to spending.
Through Early Research, We Found:
74%
of users wanted to invest automatically but “never got around to it”
68%
associated spending with guilt, and investing with complexity
56%
wanted to start with amounts under ₹100, but no platform meaningfully supported that
Existing tools created cognitive load. Users had to plan, decide, allocate. That’s not how habits are built. We wanted to build a system that worked with their behavior, not against it.
From 225 Surveyed Users and 12 In-Depth Interviews:
79%
said they wanted investment “without thinking”
61%
preferred automatic systems tied to existing behaviors (like swiping, tapping, scanning)
72%
said "I feel like I spend without realizing — this would help me reverse that."
These insights informed a product experience that prioritized:
✅ Emotional language over financial jargon
✅ Lightweight UI over dense graphs
✅ Passive triggers over active choices
How might we help young users build consistent investment habits by turning everyday spending into effortless, automatic, and goal-aligned micro-investments?
And Then We Identified the Criteria That Would Drive Product Success

High Adoption & Engagement:
A significant increase in the number of users activating and regularly using Magic Spends.

Consistent Micro-Investments:
Users making frequent, automated investments with every transaction, leading to a steady rise in monthly investment volume.

Improved Financial Habits:
Noticeable improvement in users’ saving and investing behaviors, especially among millennials and Gen-Z.

Positive User
Feedback:
High user satisfaction and Net Promoter Score (NPS), with users finding the feature easy, valuable, and enjoyable.
The Aha Moment
One small line changed everything:
“What if every time you spend, a little goes to your future self?”
This wasn’t just a feature idea. It was a new mental model:
Spending becomes investing.
Guilt becomes progress.
Consumption becomes contribution.
This one-line insight became our north star—and the foundation of Magic Spends.
Magic Spends: From Every Spend, A Silent Investment
We designed a lightweight feature that lets users auto-invest more than ₹10 every time they make a payment through UPI or debit card. Spend ₹199 on Swiggy → ₹20 is auto-invested in mutual funds or digital gold. It’s customizable, invisible, and beautifully reassuring.
Core Principles:
✅ No friction: 30-second opt-in.
✅ No anxiety: Small, recurring amounts. No pressure.
✅ No silence: Delightful nudges, weekly summaries, and visual feedback that shows progress.
We designed not just a tool, but a habit loop — built on behavior design, not dashboards.

We Got Pretty Amazing Results With Magic Spends
80,000+
users activated Magic Spends within the first 6 months(15% of total app users)
₹450/month
average investment per user
35%
increase in investment activity among Gen Z and millennials
27%
higher weekly engagement was observed among users with Magic Spends enabled.
Learnings and Final Thoughts
Behavior change doesn’t need willpower—it needs design.
When you tie positive habits to existing actions, you remove the need for discipline.
People don’t want to manage money—they want to feel in control of it.
Magic Spends wasn’t designed to feel magical. It was designed to feel normal. Invisible. Native. Because the best financial habits don’t announce themselves — they just happen.
We didn’t redesign investing. We redefined what a single rupee can mean.
